The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman – 351 pages

My husband and I heard an interview with the author on the Graham Norton show one night. Mr. Osman clearly enjoyed writing this first novel and the premise sounded interesting.

At an upscale retirement village in England, there are four residents who join up and discuss murder cases that have gone cold to attempt to solve them. The first third or so of the book is very light and also very funny. Once the plot starts thickening, the humor recedes and I found myself needing to concentrate more closely so I could follow the hints and clues.

It was a good read, and ended up having a lot more substance than I would have thought from either the author’s interview or the first part of the book – which I enjoyed.
