The Good Lord Bird by James McBride — 417 pages

This was an interesting novel. It is set in the late 1850’s, the last years of the abolitionist’s, John Brown, life. Henry Shackleford is a young boy who, through a series of unusual events, becomes like a son to John Brown. The book is written through Henry, or Henrietta, or Onion’s eyes. The writing style was disconcerting at first, but the rhythm of the author’s cadence made many of the scenes read like poetry. I will be thinking about this book for a good long time.
